NET@WORK: the annual symposium of European foundations
Since 2016, Luigi Sturzo Institute has participated in the annual event promoted by the Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies and entitled Net@Work, which takes place in Brussels, promotes a debate on the challenge of migration. Numerous European foundations take part in the event, which is the largest event of its kind, including Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and Hanns-Seidel Stiftung, to discuss priority issues for the European agenda and national agendas with experts and institutional representatives.
I edition April 20th, 2016 “The Refugee Crisis: Beyond the State of Emergency”
The EU is facing an unprecedented challenge on its southern borders. The instability of the neighboring regions, from Syria, at war since 2011, to Libya, in the chaos after the overthrow of Muhammad Gaddafi, to Egypt and Yemen, the instabilities and conflicts have produced a strong increase in refugees: only in 2015 more of a million migrants and refugees reached Europe. The debate intends to discuss the national, European and international implications of the current refugee crisis and the possibility of developing a shared strategy, which overcomes the state of emergency.

II edition April 26th, 2017 “The inconvenient truth: Challenges of EU migration policies”
In light of the unrest and instability in the European neighborhood, which represent an unprecedented challenge for the EU migration policy, the debate promoted by the Sturzo Institute intends to reflect on how to develop a common European response to this challenge and at the same time strengthen the cooperation with the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean. III edition April 26th, 2018 “Time to act: Finding a realistic strategy for the migration challenge”
The Sturzo Institute promotes a debate on the current challenges posed at the external borders of the European Union, in particular along the central Mediterranean route, with the aim of stimulating reflection on concrete action proposals that make it possible to overcome the emergency and the divisions created within Europe on the issue.

IV edition October 16th, 2019 “Time for a new European pact on migration?”
Despite a recent reduction in the number of migrants entering Europe irregularly, migration still remains an urgent and unresolved issue for the EU. While the disembarkation crises of rescued passengers have been dealt with on a case-by-case basis and the reform of the Dublin system is stalled, the EU’s failure to respond could lead to difficulties in meeting future challenges, further destabilizing unity within the Union and increasing tensions between Member States.
Ursula von der Leyen has promised a “new start on migration” and a group of member states are trying to find an agreement. Will the European legislator be the one to initiate a real new European migration policy? How will it be possible to overcome the divisions between the Member States? Will it be conceivable to find a shared answer?

V edition November 25th, 2020 “New European Pact on Migration: Overcoming the Stall?”
The Sturzo Institute, in collaboration with Hanns Seidel Stiftung, promotes a debate on the new European Pact for Migration and its future perspectives, wondering about the possibility that European states will overcome current differences and find a compromise on the issue.
Is migration still a priority for all Member States struggling with the Coronavirus emergency? Will the new concept of “flexible solidarity” succeed in bringing all states back to the negotiating table and re-establishing a climate of mutual trust? What could stand in the way of reaching a political agreement in principle by the end of the year, as hoped for by the current German EU Presidency? These are some of the issues that will be explored in the debate.

VI Edition Aprile 21, 2020 “Women and the future of Europe”
In view of the Conference on the future of Europe, the Sturzo Institute promotes a debate on the role of women and the future of the EU.
The pandemic crisis is exacerbating pre-existing inequalities, but at the same time it offers the opportunity to rethink our societies and the future of the EU, including through powerful financial tools such as the Next Generation EU and unprecedented citizen participation offered by the conference on future of the EU.
The von der Leyen Commission has made gender equality a central component of its ambitious program. Women are gaining greater visibility, including as leaders, but remain under-represented in top positions and decision-making places that can rethink politics, the economy and society.
How can we prevent the pandemic crisis from compromising the important progress made so far in the field of gender equality? How can we ensure that Europe represents a model in the field of equality, both vis-à-vis its Member States and on the international stage? How will the reflection on the future of the EU be carried out with and for women? The debate intends to investigate these questions, starting with the measures implemented by the Parliament and the European Commission.
