The new Pact on Migration and Asylum – How can we succeed?

Since the top of the migration crisis in 2015/2016, the Commission and the Council of the EU have sought in vain for a compromise between the Member States in order to rebalance the responsibilities and burdens in this area more fairly among the Member States. In September 2020, the European Commission presented a new pact on migration and asylum to establish a common migration management mechanism that is effective, resilient and reliable and safeguards human rights, based on the fair sharing of efforts and obligations. Due to the complexity of the issue, the EU and its partner countries will be dealing with the topic for many years to come.

Also in view of the Conference on the Future of the EU, Istituto Luigi Sturzo and the Brussels Office of the Hanns Seidel Foundation are promoting an online policy dialogue series to provide an opportunity to promote and facilitate political dialogue among relevant political actors on questions related to the new pact of migration and asylum. Political and institutional representatives, and experts,  have the opportunity to enhance the exchange of information on current developments, positions and challenges on national and European level, in closed-door sessions,  on the following three issues:

• March 23th, 2021 The Core Principles of the New Pact: Balance between Responsibility and Solidarity;
• April 21st, 2021 The internal Dimension: Harmonisation and Interaction;
• The external Dimension: Focus on countries of transit and origin
