Citizens of European countries, especially young people, feel less and less the sense of belonging to Europe and the democratic deficit discourages the exercise of active citizenship.
The crisis of multilateralism – one of the strengths of the Western world -, the inequalities that have taken on planetary dimensions, mass migration phenomena, the revolution in production systems that changes the world of work, new nationalisms, the resistance of some countries to respect the rule of law and the new democracies that are struggling to take off, determine the context with which the European Union must confront if it wants to resume the path towards political integration.
