Aldo Moro in the archives of Luigi Sturzo Institute
Moro and the party
The archival funds owned by Luigi Sturzo Institute are mainly focused on the activity of the Christian Democracy party. Not only the DC fund in all its articulations (national congresses, councils, leadership, political secretariat, parliamentary groups) but also the funds of individual personalities often have a large part of their documentation related to party activity . It is therefore evident that the consultation of these documents is fundamental for the analysis of the political activity of Aldo Moro carried out within the party, to understand the characteristics of its commitment and to accurately construct the different phases. Since the first legislature Moro is, in fact, called to play a managerial role as vice-president of the Christian Democrat group in the Chamber of Deputies. Beginning in 1953 (with the start of the second term) he will be elected president of the group, a function he will leave at the moment of his entry as minister of grace and justice in the Scelba government, in July 1955. He will then be called to play a fundamental role in the party with the election as political secretary on March 16, 1959. To document this delicate and crucial phase, which will bring out the peculiarities of Morotean leadership and the effectiveness of its strategy – in particular with regard to the strenuous but stubborn weaving of the center-left – they are above all (though not only) the documents kept in the fund of the political secretariat of the years 1959-1963 and of the national leadership. On this side a contribution of interest for understanding the complexity of this phase can also be found in the personal papers of politicians such as Guido Gonella, Mario Scelba, Giovanni Gronchi, Giuseppe Spataro, Giulio Andreotti, Gennaro Cassiani.
